Alexander Downer

Alexander Downer is one of Australia’s most recognisable diplomatic and political figures.

He served as Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 2007, making him the longest-serving foreign minister in the country’s history. During that time, he was instrumental in shaping Australia’s response to global terrorism, regional peacekeeping in East Timor and the Solomon Islands, and building strategic alliances with major powers. Prior to that, Downer led the Liberal Party as Opposition Leader and represented the electorate of Mayo in South Australia for more than two decades.

Following his parliamentary career, Alexander Downer was appointed Australian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 2014 to 2018. He also served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, where he spent several years facilitating complex peace negotiations between Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders. His diplomatic style which is forthright, pragmatic and often blunt has drawn both praise and criticism over the years, especially in moments of high political drama.

Today, Alexander Downer is Executive Chair of the International School for Government at King’s College London and Chairman of UK think tank Policy Exchange. He also sits on the board of Yellow Cake Plc, which invests in uranium as a critical energy commodity, and is a trustee of the International Crisis Group. These roles reflect his continued interest in governance, security, and the future of energy and diplomacy.

Alexander Downer remains a provocative voice in debates about foreign policy, Western cohesion, and democratic values. His career has not been without controversy. Most notably is his 2016 meeting with Trump aide George Papadopoulos, which played a role in the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the US election. But throughout, Downer has maintained a belief in strong institutions, global engagement, and the value of experience in a turbulent world.
